Education for Aged Care Facilities

Banksia Palliative Care is dedicated to improving the care of palliative patients.  By providing education to staff, we can support them to provide better care for residents in palliative care.

The sessions below are delivered virtually, however we can deliver these in person, so please contact us to discuss your specific requirements.

End of Life and Physical Care

1 hour session – ($240 + GST).

This course covers:

  • What is palliative care
  • Illness trajectories
  • End of life care pathways
  • Signs of deterioration and dying
  • What to do when someone has died
  • Self-care

Introduction of continuous subcutaneous infusions (Syringe Drivers)

1 hour session – ($240 + GST).

This course covers:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of using a syringe driver
  • Indications for use of a syringe driver
  • Infusion sites
  • Common medications and compatibility in syringe drivers.

Identifying the deteriorating person and Communication with families

2 hour session – ($460 +GST).

This course covers:

  • Indicators of deterioration
  • Disease-specific clinical indicators
  • Supportive and palliative care for the deteriorating client
  • How to care for someone at the end of life
  • Effective communication (including end-of-life conversations)

End of Life and Physical Care and Palliative Care Medications

2 hour session – ($460 +GST).

This course covers:

  • Introduction to palliative care
  • Identification of the deteriorating person
  • How to care for someone at the end of life
  • Common medications used in palliative care and their side effects
  • When to introduce/use palliative care medications

Identifying deterioration, end of life care, communication with families and Palliative Care Medications

4 hour session – ($800 + GST).

This course covers:

  • What is palliative care
  • Illness trajectories
  • Indicators of deterioration and end of life
  • What to do when someone has died
  • Effective communication (including end-of-life conversations)
  • Self-care and supporting colleagues

8 Week Virtual Education

Each 3 hour session is $200 + gst (or $1250 + gst for all sessions)

In addition to the above, we run an 8-week virtual education course for people interested in, or working in palliative care.  For more information and dates, click here.

This course is more in-depth, and covers:

  • Session 1 – Introduction to Palliative Care
  • Session 2 – Importance of Psychosocial Support
  • Session 3 – Pain Management
  • Session 4 – End of Life
  • Session 5 – Opioid conversions and syringe drivers
  • Session 6 & 7 – Symptom Management (over two weeks); and
  • Session 8 – Palliative care emergencies, treatment and tools.
