Person-centred care
Person-centred care at Banksia is identifying and prioritising what is important to our clients. It places the wishes and needs of clients at the centre of the support we provide. Each individual is understood through their values, concerns, and preferences which we set out to intentionally learn, so that information and options can be offered in support of these. Our client’s home provides us with an environment where they are comfortable and this allows more open communication with them, and their families and carers, enabling staff to better understand what matters to each person and to tailor support accordingly.
We recognise the crucial role a person’s close network plays in their wellbeing. That’s why we actively include our client’s important people in the care process—offering guidance, emotional support, and if our client agrees, opportunities to participate in decision-making. We consider the whole person in our consultations, including their physical, mental, and spiritual health, as well as the environmental and financial factors affecting them and those around them.
At Banksia, we empower our clients and their identified important people by providing clear information and care options, encouraging quality of life (as defined by the individual), active participation in all aspects of treatment and decisions. Our diverse team, comprised of doctors, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, counsellors, occupational and massage therapists, and the whole administrative support team work together to deliver holistic care that adapts to each person’s changing needs.
We believe care planning should be a collaborative process, ensuring every client and their important people feel heard, supported, and confident in their preferences, and we will keep those preferences in the forefront of our minds as we offer treatments and supports.
“The Palliative Care Team are culturally diverse and I feel that they understand the fact that my dad (who is Greek) would want his cultural values respected”.
